Following is a poem written by Lisa Aksen for Colin when I was pregnant with him. It inspired me incredibly, and it still is empowering to read. It’s hung in Colin’s room.
Dear One
Birth is a miracle
From Heaven to your conception
Through 9 months of transformation
Cells dividing, growing and building upon each other
Till it is time for you to spring forth
From the ecstatic cocoon of your mother’s womb
Into this world where others exist
Dear One
Know how blessed you are
Know how exceptional your parents are
Know the gift you are to them!
Know how amazing your mother is
For in a world where most births are a procedure based in pain, fear, numbness and suffering
You are welcomed from a fearless mother in a river of love, an ocean of warmth
Her mind awareness, consciousness and knowledge is rare
Few women evolve to such a state. Your mother has.
Know that your mother is gifted with ease, grace, courage and infinite love
Know that your father is a gift of compassion, love and devotion
