Lose 10 Pounds in 3 Seconds!

How to: Just say this:

Make your kids appear smart but unable to communicate… “My kids are homeschooled.”
Make your kids appear obnoxious, out of control and just generally off… [...]

Interview With Unschooled College Student

If you’re wondering how Gianna and Colin are going to get into college, this interview on Yarns of the Heart might help make sense of it all. I find interviews with young people who are homeschooled to be fascinating, since most of the time I’m talking about small people – it’s nice to hear about [...]

Video Games and Learning

We’ve been debating the video game issue lately at home and in the development of our Sage Creek Sudbury school. I’ve been thinking that it’s important for me to provide the kids with alternatives to videos and video games, but that participating in them is part of modern child development. I’m not going to prohibit [...]

I'm On Fire Help Me

Nana gave us a birthday flower thingee that “sang” happy birthday for G’s birthday last year, but it really came out as a squeaky little noise because they lit it on fire without reading the instructions. It sounds more like someone calling out for help. Stefan started singing this crazy song to the tune of [...]

How Unschooling Works

I’ll give an example of how brilliantly unschooling works – a model of education that allows children to follow their bliss rather than following the person in front of them when the bell rings.

Gianna is introduced to Harry Potter books. Reads the first one, the second, the third. Before we know it, she’s read [...]

Gianna in Ballet

Gianna has two roles in the April performance of Cappellia in San Luis Obispo. She is loving ballet – gets very excited when it’s time to go to class – and she’s improving quickly just from the classes. (I’d love to give her and her friend, Mac, supplemental classes in our yoga studio, but we [...]

Making Candles

Gianna and I attended a class to learn about making candles. It was absolutely lovely – a very relaxed environment at the home of a homeschool family. They had goats and chickens and a beautiful piece of land. The class itself was so low-key, and Gianna and I enjoyed creating beautiful candles. The kids would [...]

Socialization

When we attend the Fieldtrip class on Mondays, the adults enjoy socializing as much as the children. Kids need to socialize? What about the parents?

Why is it that people think kids need to be in classrooms with 30 kids their own age – and then get dropped into a world when they graduate – only [...]

Colin’s First Day of Preschool

Colin went to his first day of preschool today! I stayed around for 2 hours waiting for him to be ready for me to leave. He eventually said he was OK being there by himself and Gianna and I went to the library. It was so cool! He loved it. It’s a Montessori emphasis, but [...]

Cambria Today

Today we visited Moonstone Beach in Cambria. As you can see, it was really windy… but what a beautiful beach! It’s worth the drive.

We also visited HART, a cat rescue and adoption organization in Cambria.
