After reading a number of addiction memoirs – generally meth, food, alcohol – I’ve realized what I expect from them. Believability? Nope. Give it to me larger than life – the more drugs used, the better; the more weight lost, the more intriguing. I want the story to be big and ugly – the author climbing out of a big self-induced pit hellish pit, slipping back in and yelling for help. But I want them to make it in the end, because I want to fall in love with the addict, to feel like they’re a part of me – but for the grace of God. So if I love them in spite of their horrors and they’re safe in the end, recovered from the pit, I can celebrate with them and experience relief for them. There’s a happy ending, a wow-I’m-doing-the-right-thing message, and there’s meaning behind the hell they went through. I want meaning! After all, there must be meaning for all the hell they’ve put themselves and others through, right?

Tied in with this is a need to respect the author/addict. They’ve screwed everyone, abused their bodies, sucked the world dry and hit the bottom, but they know that. They admit it. There’s a warning in there. There’s a confession. They will not win me over if they are pompous assholes in the end. A little self-flagellation mixed with powerful insight goes a long way in this genre.

Brandon Novak’s Dreamseller: An Addiction Memoir failed my interest in powerful insight. While many authors in this genre attract intellectuals (addicts or not), Novak’s style must be interesting to young people only. Nothing wrong with that except for the obvious – and this just gets me – the book claims to be a warning for others to not follow his path, but it ends with him bragging about his beautiful girlfriend and his amazing pitbull dog. And he’s a television personality and star of movies. The book concludes with Novak having swum around in the bottom of the pit, annoyingly stripping everything from everyone, being a slimy leach and finally ending in the arms of his “beautiful” girlfriend and his dog who’s annoyingly named Diva.

The dog, the girlfriend, the tattoos – it’s puke-inducing. Nothing has changed and I want to throw the book through a window. He’s still a self-focused little worm. He still thinks he’s a star. He’s not – he’s a loser and I’m pissed because this is not, as the book professes to be, a warning to young people. It’s Do What I Do and End Up Fine and it’s decidedly not fine. Novak, you missed the part about the American Dream – we pick ourselves up, have an epiphany, get a fucking job and write a book about it. You missed the epiphany/job steps and took us all for a ride on your little book project.

He writes at the end: “Now I face a painful and disturbing conclusion. Through Scott’s struggle, as well as through my own, there has been no epiphany, no catharsis, no transformation of character. And this uncomfortable feeling, this emotional void, this uncertainty that I am experiencing is the essence of addiction.”

My criticism of his is the essence of codependence – I expect better, don’t get it and am disappointed. He is my brother and my journey is to accept him, predictable pitbull and all. I just don’t have to like his book.

After tonight’s meal of cous cous and fake meat made from Gardein Garden Protein, I’ve sworn off analogue flesh. We had BBQ Pulled Shreds (fake shredded chicken)…

and boy do I need to drink some water. Eating that food was like screwing a fake vagina – there’s something here that feels the same but there’s no denying that it’s just plastic. (OK, so the comparison isn’t accurate – vaginas are perfectly lovely, meat is just gross.)

Why do people eat this stuff? It’s like the vegetarian cheese products – they’re probably only eaten once… by every single vegetarian in the world.

Gardein products are sold at my local Vons. I highly don’t recommend them. If I were a God-fearin’ gal I’d be confessing about wasting perfectly good money on plastic food that my body hates.

I love going barefoot, so when I found Vibram’s Five Fingers shoes in Kauai last year I fell in love. They’re really just foot protection for people who prefer bare feet, and I got me a pair for my birthday in July. Anders asked me today if these shoes are addictive, which isn’t a strange question since they’re just so unusual and exciting and fantastic!

I have yet to take a run in them (since I don’t jog anyway), but they’re so comfortable and delicious. I think I’ll collect all four!

Aren’t they just so obscenely strange? People stare at my feet like I had an accident. But they’re so perfect and lovable.

One of the best things about the San Francisco Chronicle’s online presence, SFGate.com, is the commentary at the end of each news piece. The reader comments are often the best part of reading the news, which is a reflection of how I appreciate hearing people’s perspectives, learning from groups, etc. I like reading the reporting but I want to know what other readers think. Some of the reader commentary is just silly and appeals to my lizard brain, like this one: Watches A’s, Gets Tased and I always enjoy reading responses to Mark Morford (mostly the yawns and teasing of the radical right – the 3 of them who read SFGate.com). Here’s Mark Morford’s most recent.

When someone dies, the reader commentary is usually incredibly respectful, unlike the usual immature, humorous verbiage. Here’s an example of the comments from today’s news about John Hughes’ death.

I read some parental complaints that the movie Up was too scary for their preschoolers and grade schoolers, so I prepped the kids before we went. We watched a bit of the movie when scary-looking dogs are chasing the main characters. My kids thought it was exciting and couldn’t wait to see the film on the big screen.

It turned out to have scary bits toward the end for Colin (4 years old). The theme of main characters being close to falling off a blimp – while being chased by the bad guy – was too much for Colin, but it’s a small part of the film and he stuck it out. There were many laugh-out-loud moments for the children and adults, and both of my kids recite lines from it, like the main dog character saying, “my master made me this collar so I may talk!” Very cute.

The film is colorful and magical, but I’m not sure everyone will relate to the main character, an elderly man who doesn’t seem to grab children’s fascination like other Pixar/Disney characters I can think of. I can’t imagine a child demanding a Carl doll – or even the boy character. The real hit in this film is the dog, who gets very little time.

There are many adult themes in the beginning of Up, which might have children wondering what the heck is going on. Carl meets his future wife as a kid and they grow up together, get married and plan adventures that never come to pass. Carl’s wife even has a miscarriage, though it would be impossible for anyone under 9 to get that.

The moment the house lifts off the ground, this movie gets going for the young audience. There’s tons of action and adventure and beautiful scenery. Although we never really get to know the boy character in a meaningful way (or maybe my adult mind wants to know more about his dad) and some of the details are missing about how Carl becomes so able-bodied, the ending of the story is extremely heartwarming and lovely.

Kids will be thoroughly entertained by this film, but don’t expect them to have Up obsessions like they might have had with Cars or Toy Story. What a blessing!

There are two (count ‘em) TWO environmentally-friendly restaurants next door to Trader Joe’s in San Luis Obispo. One is Evos, a burger joint that has air baked fries. Quick comment: Don’t take their food home – it tastes much better fresh out of the air baking unit. They have vegan food! If you’re into burgers and such, you’ll enjoy this place (in spite of the higher price compared to Burger King’s 3 burger for $1 daily special, for example).

Then there’s Pizza Fusion in the same little shopping mall which is super yummy (in spite of this horrible photo). They serve vegan pizza and great salads and organic wine and beer (not that I drink anymore). It’s fabulous food!

When I’ve been to estheticians in the past they focused on massage and extractions. I’d never had anything fancy done to my skin beyond a mask, though it’s been tempting to do peels and scrapes and other things that sound incredibly… bad.

Lulu’s (in my very own community) has two very special treatments that are so… good. Unbelievably good. I’m 40 and my skin has been through the ringer – the sun ringer, that is – so I’m all wrinkly already. One visit to Lulu’s for her Microcurrent facial was unbelievable. I don’t have photos of myself, but check out these before and after shots. That’s after just one treatment.

I couldn’t see a huge difference in the salon right after my first treatment, but when I went home and looked in the mirror it was incredible how my wrinkles had been smoothed out.

I know, I know. We’re modern women and we’re not supposed to be concerned about wrinkles and getting old and feeling tired and looking tired. Horse poop! If you know a woman who wouldn’t want a break from her wrinkled face, give them 20 bucks for me, ’cause they’re a better person than I am.

Lulu also has an Oxygen Facial that works miracles without any needles or surgery or perma-smiles. Why do you think Madonna has her own Oxygen Facial machine?

I’m telling you, this salon has the devices that are used in Beverly Hills and Manhattan by people who are invested in having smooth, young-looking skin. And Lulu won’t mess up your face… she leaves that to the amateurs who think frying your face with chemicals and poking around inside your pores is a good idea.

Just get yo’self over to Lulu’s and she’ll bust our your wrinkles in no time. I’m not kidding!

Think we’re crazy for buying a $600 vacuum?

We did some research when our old Sears vacuum died… the one that cost us $250 in repairs alone over the last four years (not to mention $200 to buy it in the first place)… the one that weighs 40 pounds… the one that intimidates the children… the one that scares the shit out of the cats… the one that is impossible to use on stairs… the one that just doesn’t suck very well.

We heard from our friend, Tom. “Don’t buy anything but a Miele… everything else is just hype. Look at a Miele.” So we looked at the brand and saw the magic. We had a vacuum experience – like a religious experience but more domestic. It was Miele for us… no matter what the cost. And the cost was… well, you know that diamond commercial where they talk about your wife being worth two month’s salary? Well, domestic bliss was worth a big chunk of change.

Our Ms. Miele is fashionably turquoise, she’s incredibly powerful, she weighs about 8 pounds, she’s tiny, she cleans corners, her attachments are easy to access and easy to attach. The engineering on this machine is incredible. You know how hard it can be to maneuver a canister vacuum (they fall over themselves)? Ms. Miele has ball bearing wheels that spin around, so you can kick her around the floor without a problem. The tube thingee from the canister is indestructible – you can stand on it and it bounces back. The cord retracts easily. The cats don’t even notice when it’s on – and I can talk on the phone while vacuuming.

But we didn’t realize that the vacuum would transform our kids’ perspective on cleaning. They’re now really involved in cleaning the house (vacuuming as well as folding laundry).

Hallelujah!
