Why I Keep Injuring Myself

I’m stealing this from a barefoot running board I’m on:

In addition to build up the musculature and bone mass (which takes time for the adaptations to occur), my experience is that beginners make the following mistakes:

* Over-striding – resulting in higher impact on the foot during landing. [which I do]
* Low Cadence – similar [...]

Before and Now Running

I had assumptions about running before I started. My comparison of pre-running and now:

Pre-Running:
Can you please wait until I drive by you before you blow your nose on your sleeve? It’s disgusting.

Now:
I come home from 6 miles with a very wet, slimy set of arms.

Pre-Running:
Hacking up and spitting your phlem is disgusting and [...]

7 Mile Mama

To think that in December I could barely run around the block! I’m happy about this, particularly running barefoot.

7 miles took an hour an a half. That’s 4-1/2 – 5 miles per hour, but that includes:

- Stopping for a while to figure out if I could possibly get a beautiful dead cat out [...]

Getting Back in the Saddle

I ran this morning – 5 miles, 3 of which were barefoot. It was great running without shoes, as usual, and putting my FiveFingers back on for the rough parts felt like attaching pillows to each foot (so soft, padded, protected). And they’re only millimeters of rubber! I guess putting on a pair of running [...]

My First Race

Last night Stefan, the kids and I slept overnight in our camper at Camp Roberts in San Miguel so I could be there bright and early for my first race… a 5k at Buzz Marathon. Colin was fascinated by the soldiers who had to grants us permission to stay the night.

I wore my FiveFingers, [...]

Running 5 Miles

I bought myself a fancy watch that tells me how far I’ve run and how fast I’m going – a Garmin. (Mine was a lot cheaper than the website advertises.) Took for a spin yesterday, running 5 miles in an hour, including warm up speed. I loved looking at my heart rate and the distance [...]

Barefoot Running on NPR

National Public Radio has a great feature on barefoot running. I look for this topic, and it seems like everyone is buzzing about it.

Running Update

I ran a personal record on Monday – 4.3 miles in 55 minutes. Considering most people walk about 3 miles per hour, my 4+ mile per hour pace is the runner’s equivalent of molasses. And I took a rest day Tuesday and today I was supposed to run but my eCornell class and family life [...]

Celebrity Five Fingers Siting

I couldn’t help stealing this from a post on BirthdayShoes.com… a video clip from TMZ (whatever that is) interviewing Channing Tatum (whoever that is). They tease him about his shoes, which happen to be Vibram Five Fingers. These guys are about, say, five years old – but they’re in Hollywood, so there’s got to be [...]

Runner’s World Interview

Runner’s World interviewed Barefoot Ted… a great piece about a great barefoot runner. I’m glad barefoot running is starting to get the attention of this magazine. I’m also looking forward to reading the February 2010 hardcopy.

I didn’t know that he set a world record for skateboarding 242 miles. That, and running 100+ miles, takes [...]
